Won't someone think of the children?
According to VH1 music videos I saw this morning, the following is the range of acceptable messages for ladies to send to their gentlemen.

I'm hot. If you stare at my ass you can tell I'm interested in you. Come dance with me.

I like having sex a lot, but I will play hard to get briefly.

Just take off my clothes already!

I don't really know what I'm doing here on VH1. Um. I'll choose to live life how I please. I'll smile at you if I like you.

Not a flirty song, but of note nonetheless, just because it is visually fascinating:
Crazy

Clearly the Pussycat Dolls are a burlesque troupe masquerading as a girl band. And whoever their choreographer is is good.

Clearly. Sadly, I am not entirely comfortable with that masquerade.

About that, I think the second poster on YouTube expressed it best:

I haven't _really_ looked at the lyrics in Promiscuous (second link) but from the few times I've heard it I rather like it. It sounds to me like a discussion between equals, which is pretty damned rare. Maybe there's some key lyric that reveals something I've missed seeing, but on the whole I think it's a pretty decent message.

Certainly compared to that song When you're mad, which basically says, "It's cute how you think you're powerful enough for your anger to have any effect. Let's have sex now."
could it be the little wrinkle over your nose
when you make your angry face
that makes me wanna just take off all your clothes
and sex you all over the place, yeah
could it be the little way your storm around
that makes me wanna tear you down

Part of me thinks that it's wonderful when song lyrics explicitly endorse gender subjugation--I have this naive thought that if it's all out in the open, people will see it for what it is. I mean, if Snoop wrote a song called "Women are the new second-class citizens and I hate them"--surely, 50% of the population would stop supporting him?

Oh, wait, he pretty much did. And hey, check out the female fans in this video of the above song, smiling and clapping while an actor on stage portrays a woman fighting for equality and getting dismissed and patronized.

-sigh- Black people used to laugh at minstral shows, too, I guess...

The only value the song imputes to her is her sexuality. He has some value as a seducer, she is merely waiting to be seduced. He is the one who wants, she is the one who is wanted. He is the one who owns, she is the one who is all his. She has to wait for him to act, he just has to get her to give in.

I may be reading more into it than is there.

I am not unless you are paying > $30/hour. Or if it's something that I'm willing to more or less donate to.

Spooky is.
